Social Events


The Oceania organisers have put together a wide range of Social Events during the carnival week. Please support these many activities and events.

Friday January 2 – Official Opening – 18.00 (after the World Cup Sprint Qualification, 16.00)

Open to all, in the spectacular setting in the First Basin and Cliff Grounds of the Cataract Gorge, Launceston.

Come early and watch the world elite athletes in action from 16.00 and then enjoy a great evening – watch the parade of athletes and the Opening Ceremony – stroll the Victorian gardens, swim in the large outdoor pool, take the chair lift across the First Basin, bring a picnic if you’ve missed out on the pre-paid gourmet BBQ or purchase meals or snacks and ice cream from the two cafes.

Friday January 2 – Gourmet BBQ – Cataract Gorge, Launceston – 18.30

Following the World Cup Sprint Qualification and the Official Opening of the carnival and catered by the Basin Café (numbers limited and available to pre-purchased ticket holders through our Oceania and World Cup – Camping, Merchandise and SI Hire page  only). Bookings for the Gourmet BBQ can be made through Eventor up until December 23. Vegetarian and other dietary options are available. A menu is available in the Eventor documents section.

Friday January 2 – Run the Basin – 18.30 – 19.45

Your opportunity to run the World Cup Sprint Qualification in your own time – self-managed and timed (not an event). Pre-payment through our  Oceania and World Cup – Camping, Merchandise and SI Hire page or at Event Centre on January 2. Collect your map after 6.30 and go. Please note that controls will be collected at 19.45

From Friday January 2. Swansea O Trail

In another great initiative from the local community, Miriam Scurrah, editor of Great Oyster Bay Community (GOBC) News and the Swansea Online Access Centre has produced a photographic orienteering activity in the tradition of those from recent events at Canberra, Rylstone and Fremantle.

Available at Registration, the Jubilee Beach Evening Festival, the GOBC News website ( as well as Swansea accommodation houses.

Wednesday  January  7 – Kelvedon Estate Wine Tasting –Event Arena

Jack Cotton of the historic East Coast property, Kelvedon, near Swansea will have his award winning Kelvedon Estate wines available for tasting and sales in the event arena. Winner in, 2009 and 2014, of the Tasmanian Vineyard of the Year.

Wednesday January  7- Swansea Jubilee Beach Evening Festival – 17.30- 21.00

Swansea foreshore (near amphitheatre). An event put on especially for orienteering visitors with BBQ, food and craft stalls, an ice-cream van and live entertainment provided by the local community.

Stay on to enjoy their hospitality after the Kelvedon event before you return to your accommodation. Tasmania has long twilight evenings. The Swansea Visitor Information Centre and East Coast Heritage Museum have extended their hours to 21.00.

Saturday January 10 – St Helens RSL – 35 Quail St, St Helens

The Returned and Services League of Australia, a long-term supporter of orienteering in St Helens, is providing a live band for the entertainment of orienteers on Saturday night, January 10. A wide range of well-priced meals is available.

Sunday January 11 – Final Presentations “The Oceania Fiesta” – St Helens District High School – From 16.00


Wind down, relax and farewell friends while you await the Final Presentations at 17.30 with refreshments and stalls.
